This is the most basic method of placing an article; understanding how this process works will help when making use of the more complex methods.
This method can be split into the following actions:
- Placing a single article component in a single frame
- Placing a multi-component article in a single frame
Notes: For the sake of simplicity, the scenarios that follow refer to an article component that has not yet been placed elsewhere. For information about placing articles multiple times, see Placing an article multiple times using Studio for InDesign.
Placing a single article component in a single frame
Notes: The article that is placed is either an article containing a single component or a single component from a multi-component article.
Use one of the following methods:
- Placing an article by creating a new frame
- Replacing all text in an existing frame
- Replacing an image in an existing frame
- Replacing selected text
- Adding an article to existing text

1. Placing an article by creating a new frame
Use one of the following methods:
Method #1: dragging
Drag the article (component) onto the layout from one of the following locations:
- The Studio panel
- The Dossier panel
- The Elements panel
- Studio
A new frame is automatically created.
Method #2: using the place gun
Do one of the following:
- Double-click the article (component) in the Studio panel, the Dossier panel or the Elements panel.
- Right-click the article (component) in one of the following panels and choose 'Place' from the context menu:
- Studio panel
- Dossier panel
- Elements panel
The article is loaded into the place cursor (also known as the place gun). You can now place the article by drawing a new frame on the layout or by clicking anywhere on the layout.
2. Replacing all text in an existing frame
Step 1. Select the text frame that holds the content that you want to fully replace.
Step 2. (Optional, only when the frame contains an article that is checked-in.) Check-out the article in which the text is to be replaced.
Step 3. Use one of the following methods:
- Drag the article (component) onto the frame from one of the following locations:
- The Studio panel
- The Dossier panel
- The Elements panel
- Studio
- Double-click the article (component) in the Studio panel, the Dossier panel or the Elements panel.
- Right-click the article (component) in one of the following panels and choose 'Place' from the context menu:
- Studio panel
- Dossier panel
- Elements panel
Troubleshooting
The article (component) is loaded into the place cursor and not in the frame, or the article is placed in a new frame.
This happens when:
- The frame that you are targeting is checked-in and therefore locked for editing. Check-out the article first.
- The article that you are using to replace the text with only contains an image.
3. Replacing an image in an existing frame
Use this method to replace the content of a graphics frame or an inline image in a text frame by an article that itself contains an image.
Step 1. Select the frame that holds the image that you want to replace.
Step 2. (Optional, only when the frame contains an article or image that is checked-in.) Check-out the frame in which you want to replace the graphic.
Step 3. Use one of the following methods:
- Drag the article (component) onto the frame from one of the following locations:
- The Studio panel
- The Dossier panel
- The Elements panel
- Studio
- Double-click the article (component) in the Studio panel, the Dossier panel or the Elements panel.
- Right-click the article (component) in one of the following panels and choose 'Place' from the context menu:
- Studio panel
- Dossier panel
- Elements panel
Troubleshooting
The article (component) is loaded into the place cursor and not in the frame, or the article is placed in a new frame.
This happens when:
- The frame that you are targeting is checked-in and therefore locked for editing. Check-out the article first.
- The article that you are using to replace the graphic with only contains text.
- The graphics frame contains a planned image and the article also contains a planned image.
4. Replacing selected text
Step 1. (Optional, only when the frame contains an article that is checked-in.) Check-out the article in which you want to replace the text.
Step 2. Select the text that you want to replace.
Step 3. Use one of the following methods:
- Double-click the article (component) in the Studio panel, the Dossier panel or the Elements panel.
- Right-click the article (component) in one of the following panels and choose 'Place' from the context menu:
- Studio panel
- Dossier panel
- Elements panel
Troubleshooting
The article (component) is loaded into the place cursor and not in the frame.
This happens when:
- The frame that you are targeting is checked-in and therefore locked for editing. Check-out the article first.
- The article contains an empty inline graphic or a planned image.
5. Adding an article to existing text
Use this method to add an article within an existing article.
Step 1. (Optional, only when the frame contains an article that is checked-in.) Check-out the article in which you want to add another article.
Step 2. Place the cursor in the location of the text where the article needs to be added. Do not select any text.
Step 3. Use one of the following methods:
- Double-click the article (component) in the Studio panel, the Dossier panel or the Elements panel.
- Right-click the article (component) in one of the following panels and choose 'Place' from the context menu:
- Studio panel
- Dossier panel
- Elements panel
Troubleshooting
The article (component) is loaded into the place cursor and not in the frame.
This happens when:
- The frame that you are targeting is checked-in and therefore locked for editing. Check-out the article first.
- The article contains an empty inline graphic or a planned image.
Placing a multi-component article in a single frame
When placing an article containing multiple components onto a single frame, only one of the components can of course be placed. Because Studio for InDesign does not know which component to place, a dialog box appears in which you have to choose the component that you want to place:
The method of placing a multi-component article in a single frame is identical to placing a single article component as described above: select the frame and do one of the following:
- Double-click the article
- Right-click the article and choose 'Place'
- Drag the article onto the frame
