When working with layouts and layout templates in Studio for InDesign, you can:
Note: This article describes how to open layouts and layout templates in Studio for InDesign. When using InCopy, see Opening layouts in Studio for InCopy.
Updating placed files
By default, when a layout or layout template is opened for editing, all placed content is updated to its latest version. The system can also be configured to not update placed files of a certain type when the layout is opened. This makes it possible to verify each change, manually update each file and make adjustments when needed.
Opening a layout for editing
Opening a layout that is stored in Studio Server can be done from the Studio panel or the Dossier panel.

To open a layout, do one of the following:
- Double-click it.
- Right-click it and choose Open from the context menu.
- Select it in a panel and press Enter.
Properties that are inherited from a template
When the layout is based on a layout template, the newly created layout will inherit some of the properties that are defined in the template.
Which properties these are depends on the version of Studio Server that Studio for InDesign is connected to. For a full overview, see Properties that are inherited when creating a file from a template in Studio or in Studio for InDesign and InCopy.
Checked-out and checked-in layouts
When a layout is opened for editing, it is 'checked-out' of Studio Server, meaning that the layout is locked and other users are prevented from editing the layout until it is checked-in again.
Opening a layout as read-only
Use this method to view the content of the layout without checking-out the layout, thereby making it possible for other users to open it for editing.
To perform this action, do the following:
- Right-click the layout in the Studio panel or the Dossier panel and choose Open Read-Only.
Layouts that are opened as read-only can be distinguished from regularly opened layouts by the phrase [Read-Only] in the tab or title bar.
