After updating a library item by using the default InDesign menu "Update Library Item", you may find that it is not possible anymore to use this library item as a style to apply to a text selection.
The menu "Update Library Item" and its functionality are default InDesign functionality. We are dependent on Adobe to come up with a fix. As soon as a fix is available, we will announce it here.
In the meantime, do one the following:
Repair broken library items
If you updated your library item by using the "Update Library Item" menu and you want to use the library item to style a text selection, you can repair the library item in the following way:
Step 1. Place the library item on the page by dragging it from the Smart Styles library onto the layout while holding the Option key (Mac OS) or Alt key (Windows).
Step 2. Drag the placed item back into the library.
A message appears asking if you want to replace the existing item in the library.
Step 3. Click Yes.
You can now use the style for text selection styling again.
Replace a library item with a modified item
A Smart Style in the library can be replaced in the following way:
Step 1. Place the library item on the page by dragging it from the Smart Styles library onto the layout while holding the Option key (Mac OS) or Alt key (Windows)..
Step 2. Make changes to the item on the page.
Step 3. Drag the item on the page back into the library.
A message appears asking if you want to replace the item in the library.
Step 4. Click Yes.
Now you can use the changed style for text selection styling again.
