Studio for InDesign and InCopy Preferences – Help Center

Preferences make it possible to set default Studio for InDesign and InCopy options to your personal preference.

Studio for InDesign and InCopy comes with various preferences that can be set.

The main preferences are set in the WoodWing Studio section of the preferences while some default InDesign and InCopy preferences also affect how Studio for InDesign and InCopy behaves.

Both sets of preferences are described in this article.

Note: Other preferences are described elsewhere:

Smart Image. Preferences for placing images with caption and credit information.
Smart Jump. Preferences for starting an article on one page and letting it continue on another page.
Element labels. Preferences for controlling article component labels.
WoodWing. Preferences for logging application activity (for troubleshooting purposes).

Studio preferences

This section describes the default preferences for Studio for InDesign and InCopy.

Accessing the Studio preferences

InDesign
macOS: Choose InDesign > Preferences > WoodWing Studio...
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences > WoodWing Studio...

InCopy:
macOS: Choose InCopy > Preferences > WoodWing Studio...
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences > WoodWing Studio...

Proxy

When Studio Server is connected through a proxy server, enter the credentials here.

Routing message options

When a file is routed to you by another user, choose what action should take place:

Alert:
Do not show a dialog
Show dialog for messages sent to me
Show dialog for messages sent to me or my group

Options

Display layout name in Create Article. (Available in InDesign only) When selected and creating an article from the layout, the name of the layout from which the article is created is automatically added to the Name field of the Create Article dialog box.

Show import options dialog on place. When selected, the Import Options dialog box appears each time a file is placed.

Object Style: Controls the way an object style is applied when placing an article. See Styling text using InDesign object styles when placing articles with Studio for InDesign.

Bring InCopy Stories to Front in Layout view. (This feature is only available in InCopy) When enabled, opening an article that is placed on a layout will bring all article components of that story to the front in Layout view. This makes sure that all article components are fully accessible and not obscured by other layout objects. For more information, see Opening articles using Studio for InCopy.

Enable Smart Caching. (Requires Smart Caching to be implemented). When selected, Studio for InDesign and InCopy will use Smart Caching to retrieve routed files. Status messages below the preference indicate if the Smart Caching feature is correctly working.

Update Placed Studio Images When Opening a Layout. Controls whether or not placed Studio images should be updated to their latest version.

Notes:

This feature can only be used for InDesign; in InCopy this option is disabled.
When this feature is disabled in InDesign, it means that it is controlled through a configuration file.

Take note of the following:

The feature applies to images, Layout Modules, and spreadsheets.
The working of the feature depends on how the system is configured.

Studio panel

Document pane font size. For changing the font size of the text in the Document pane when using the Studio panel in List View mode.

Set either option to one of the following sizes:

Small (default setting)
Medium
Large
Extra large

Troubleshooting: After changing the Preview Pane Font Size option, the font size does not change

The issue is currently being investigated. To see the changes take affect, restart InDesign or InCopy.

InDesign and InCopy preferences

The following InDesign and InCopy preferences also affect how Studio for InDesign and InCopy behaves:

User Interface Scaling > Anchor Points, Handle, and Bounding Box Display Size. (Requires InDesign or InCopy 2022 or higher). This preference affects the following:
The size of Sticky Note pins placed on a layout.
The size of the icons that are drawn on frames containing content that is stored on the server such as icons that indicate that an article or image is placed, checked-out, and so on.
