With Studio, a user can automatically open a file for editing in its native application. Depending on what kind of file it is, installation and configuration steps are required.
A distinction is made between the following types of files:
- InCopy articles
- InDesign layouts
- All other types of files
InCopy articles and InDesign layouts
By default, articles are opened in the Print editor of Studio but they can also be automatically opened in a pre-defined version of InCopy.
Similarly, InDesign layouts can be automatically opened in a pre-defined version of InDesign.
This requires the following:
- Studio running in Google Chrome
- The Desktop application
- InCopy with Studio for InCopy installed
- InDesign with Studio for InDesign installed
Configuring Studio Server
For a proper communication with Studio for InCopy and Studio for InDesign, the Studio Server instance that Studio for InCopy and Studio for InDesign connect to for opening the files needs to be defined.
Step 1. Verify the server name to use by checking the name as it is configured in the WWSettings.xml file distributed to your workstations.
Example: Here the server name in the WWSettings.xml file is 'Studio Server': <SCEnt:ServerInfo name="Studio Server" url="http://localhost/StudioServer/index.php"/> |
Step 2. Do one of the following:
- Access the Management Console > Features page and enter the server name in the Server name field.
Note: When left empty, the value in the config.js file is used (see below).
- Access the config.js file for Studio (Studio Server path/contentstation/) and enter the server name in the serverName option.
Info: Performing the described step requires direct server access. Depending upon how your system is hosted and the level of access you have to that system, coordination may be required with your Partner or WoodWing Support team. For a full overview of the steps that need to be done by WoodWing and how to request them, see WoodWing Cloud - Change management.

Installing and setting up the Desktop application
The process of opening the article from Studio in InCopy or the layout from Studio in InDesign is performed by the Desktop application.
The version of InCopy in which the article should be opened or the version of InDesign in which the layout should be opened can be defined in the Settings window of the app.

Make sure that the Studio app is installed, correctly set up, and running. For more information, see Using the Desktop app of Studio.
All other types of files
Files other than InDesign layouts or InCopy articles can be automatically opened from within Studio. The application in which they are opened is the application that is configured on the system itself for opening that file type.
Automatically opening these files from Studio requires the Desktop application.

Make sure that the Studio app is installed and running. No specific setup is required other than making sure that the Desktop app is started when the system itself is started up. For more information, see Using the Desktop app of Studio.
