Adobe InDesign Server is used for generating previews of layouts and articles and generating PDFs for output to print.
Billing
A WoodWing Cloud-hosted InDesign server installation is an add-on and is billed separately.
Supported versions
The following versions of InDesign Server are currently supported on WoodWing Cloud:
- InDesign Server 2022
- InDesign Server 2023
- InDesign Server 2024
We continue to support all versions listed above but will only install the latest two supported versions for any new customers.
Licenses
InDesign Server licenses are provided by the customer and are not shared between customers. Starting with Adobe 2020, the license is embedded into the InDesign Server installer. If the customer has purchased Adobe InDesign Server through WoodWing, then WoodWing will have access to this installer. Otherwise, the customer will need to provide it to WoodWing.
A separate hosted InDesign server instance (and Adobe InDesign server license) is required for each Studio instance.
Fonts
Fonts and font licenses are provided by the customers and are not shared between customers. Only Open Type Fonts (OTF) are supported, including OTF fonts with TrueType outlines. True Type Fonts (TTF) and other font types are not supported.
Preview generation
Due to performance reasons, on-premise InDesign Server setups cannot be used for:
- Real-time preview generation for the Studio Print editor.
- InDesign Server Automation (the offloading of preview/thumbnail/PDF generation from the InDesign client) for Studio.
For these functions, a WoodWing Cloud-hosted InDesign server is the only option. Additionally, a WoodWing Cloud-hosted InDesign server may ONLY be used for these functions and is not usable for MadeToPrint or custom integrations.
Self-hosted InDesign Servers
Self-hosted InDesign Servers are fully managed by the customer or partner. These InDesign Servers are typically used for custom integrations and/or to generate the final PDFs.
