The Release Notes for Studio contain information about the new features, changes, fixed issues, known issues, and upgrade instructions for each release of Studio.

The versions are listed by version number in descending order. Use the Navigation block to the right of the page to quickly navigate to the information of a released version, or filter the article by version to only show that version.

Changes

The following changes have been made in this release of Studio:

Users can now enter their own prompts in the AI Assistant of the Digital editor. With the AI Assistant of the Digital editor, users can transform the content of an article by using artificial intelligence (AI). In the initial release of this feature, only predefined prompts could be used. Now, users can enter their own prompt to start the process, and additional prompts can be entered to tweak the outcome.

Prompts can refer to the results of earlier responses and can reference other answers or questions within the same session. This is very similar to having a conversation with AI.

This has the following advantages:

The first result will be closer to the desired outcome, especially when the default prompts do not match the goal.
The given result can be further tweaked instead of running the default prompt again with the hope that it will then match the required outcome.

In the AI Assistant panel, a new field has been added at the bottom in which a prompt can be entered.

AI Layout Automation: spreads can now be marked to be treated as single pages. When accessing the Layout Automation dialog for a layout that is set up as a spread, it is now possible to determine if this spread should be treated as single pages. In previous versions, making this change had to be done in the page planner.

To make this work, a custom metadata field named 'PLA_SPREAD_AS_SINGLE_PAGES' needs to be added with display name 'Handle spreads as single pages'. This field is of type boolean and acts as a toggle button in the Properties panel.

If needed, the setting can be overruled from a newly added menu in the preview pane of the layout in the Layout Automation dialog.

Note: This setting is managed on a layout level, not on an individual spread or page level. Toggling the setting for the layout affects all spreads on that layout.

CSDA-816 Studio Desktop Application is still disconnecting after upgrading to version 5.1.3 and Chrome extension 2.0.1 (Windows only).

Note: This fixes an issue on Windows machines where after waking from sleep or hibernation, the Google Chrome Extension would loose the connection to the Studio Desktop App. The extension has been updated to version 2.0.2 and updates automatically when it is already installed on Chrome.

AI Layout Automation: Articles that are already placed on the layout are now clearly indicated as such in the Layout Automation dialog. In the Layout Automation feature with which articles can be automatically placed on a layout, articles that are already placed on the layout now have a Pin icon next to their name in the Layout Automation dialog. Because they are already placed, the Exclude check box is also grayed out.

New features

The following has been added in this release of Studio:

Official release of the AI Assistant in the Digital editor. A new AI Assistant is available in the Digital editor with which users can trigger predefined AI-powered actions, such as revising tone, copy editing, shortening or expanding text, and generating titles directly inside the Digital Editor.

This feature replaces the Technology Preview of the AI Assistant and runs in a side-panel.

Features

The AI Assistant analyzes the content of a Digital article and provides suggestions on how it can be improved. It can do the following:

Lengthen the article by roughly doubling it
Shorten the article by roughly halving it
Revise the tone and style by making it:
Formal
Informal
Positive
Empathetic
Serious
Friendly
Suggest new titles
Suggest SEO titles

The results can be easily copied to the clipboard so that it can be used to replace the original text.

Requirements

Using the AI Assistant requires the following:

The 'Ultimate' package in WoodWing Cloud¹
WoodWing Studio 11.211 or higher in WoodWing Cloud
The Digital Editor in Studio
Analytics enabled in Studio
An internet connection

¹ Customers on the Ultimate package of WoodWing Cloud receive a monthly allowance of AI prompts (tokens). These prompts are shared across the organization and are consumed each time an AI action is performed.

Once the monthly allowance is reached, any additional AI usage must be purchased by the organization to continue using the feature.

Differences

Compared to the Technology preview version, the new version:

Is a paid version.
Has been redesigned for optimal efficiency.
Has fewer actions available on first release.
Does not reference an article that represents the tone and style.
Does not have the option to use custom prompts; all prompts are predefined.
Does not provide a score or action to undertake; all feedback is a direct alternative to use.

The Studio Desktop App now supports Adobe 2026. In preparation for the release of Studio for InDesign and InCopy for Adobe 2026 (planned for Q1 2026), support has been added for opening articles with InCopy 2026 and opening layouts with InDesign 2026 using the Studio Desktop App.

Changes

The following changes have been made in this release of Studio:

AI Layout Automation: Improved feedback on the number of images and quotes that are aimed to be placed versus the number that are actually placed. The Layout Automation dialog shows a column for images and a column for quotes. In previous versions, one value was shown, indicating the number of images or quotes that are aimed to be placed with the article.

To indicate the number of images or quotes that are actually going to be placed, this number is now shown as well. The format used is 'x / y', where x is the number of images or quotes that are aimed to be placed, and y is the number of images or quotes that are actually going to be placed.

Feedback when previewing Digital articles in the Trash Can has been improved. Digital articles that are placed in the Trash Can cannot be previewed. However, when doing so in earlier versions of Studio, a loader is shown, implying that the preview is being loaded. To provide users with better feedback, the text 'No preview available' is now shown.

AI Layout Automation: Articles in the Layout Automation dialog can now be filtered using a Custom Search. When accessing the Layout Automation dialog to define the articles that should be placed on a layout, all articles are listed that are part of the Brand, Issue, and Category combination that the layout is part of.

To shorten this list, a Filter option has now been added from which a pre-defined Custom Search can be chosen.

The following features have been added in this release of Studio:

Hyperlinks can now be created when adding a comment to any file anywhere in Studio. When adding a comment to any file anywhere in Studio, a hyperlink can now be created. The process is as follows:

Step 1. Edit the comment and place the cursor in the text or select some text.

Step 2. Click the Link icon or press Ctrl+K (Windows) or Cmd+K (macOS).

Step 3. Enter the text and a valid URL. When done, click Save or press Enter.

Visiting a hyperlink is done by right-clicking the link and choosing an option from the menu to open it in a new tab or window.

New features

The following features have been added in this release of Studio:

AI Layout Automation - Article Shapes can now be further distinguished by using Genres.Article Shapes are organized per Brand, Category, and Story type. In some scenarios, an additional level is required, typically related to the way a Story is styled.

Example: Within a particular Article Shape, a Story might need to be styled differently than the general styling for that Category and/or Story type.

To make this possible, a Genre can now optionally be set for an article. This is done in the Properties panel for that article. When the system is set up for using Genres, it also is shown as a column in the Layout Automation dialog.

AI Layout Automation: Support for placing unfinished stories. When the content for a publication is planned, it is often the case that an article about a certain topic has not been written yet or is not yet finalized.

To give the Layout Automation feature an idea of the size of such an unfinished article, a 'planned number of characters' can now be defined for it. This is done in the page planning application and can also be manually set in the properties of the article. This number is then used as a provisional article size when the article is used when filling a layout.

When at some point the actual number of characters is known, the planned number of characters can be reset (to zero) which makes the Layout Automation feature use the actual number of characters.

References to the planned and actual number of characters are shown in the 'Characters' column of the Layout Automation dialog and in the Properties panel for an article. See Automatically placing articles in Studio using the AI Layout Automation feature.

Changes

The following changes have been made in this release of Studio:

AI Layout Automation: The Layout Automation option in the context menu is now grayed out when files other than layouts are selected. Working with the Layout Automation feature is done by using the Layout Automation dialog. One way of opening this dialog is by selecting multiple layouts in the Search results, right-clicking one of them, and choosing 'Layout Automation...'. When one of the selected files is not a layout, this option is now grayed out.

AI Layout Automation: Only the pages of the selected layouts are now shown in the Layout Automation dialog. When the Layout Automation dialog is opened, only the pages of the selected layouts are now shown. Before, all pages of all layouts of the Brand, Issue, and Category combination were shown.

Note: When opening layouts via the Publication Overview, all pages of the Category are shown. This is a known issue which will be resolved in a future release.

AI Layout Automation: Articles that are aimed for pages that are not in the selected layouts are now automatically set to the 'Excluded' status when the dialog is opened. When the Layout Automation dialog is opened, articles that are aimed for pages that are not in the selected layouts are now automatically set to the 'Excluded' status. Clearing the status will have no effect; they will not be included in the process.

Navigating to a different Sticky Note in the Sticky Notes panel now also brings the page into view on which it is placed. The Sticky Notes panel shows all Sticky Notes that are placed on a layout. When clicking the Previous or Next buttons in the panel, or when selecting a Sticky Note in the panel, the page on which the Sticky Note is placed is now brought into view.

When adding a comment to any file in Studio, text can now be made bold, italic, or underlined. Adding a comment to any file in Studio is a powerful way of communicating within the team about the changes to the file or project that need to be made. To improve the communication, text can now be emphasized by making it bold, italic, or underlined. This can be done by making use of the toolbar that has been added, or by making use of the standard keyboard shortcut Cmd/Ctrl+B, Cmd/Ctrl+I, or Cmd/Ctrl+U.

Publication Overview: Performance has been improved by only requesting objects of the page that is visible when viewed in Full Layout view. In previous versions, when opening a layout in Full Layout view in the Publication Overview, all objects of all pages were requested, including those on pages that were not visible.

For layouts containing multiple pages and many objects, this can have a negative impact on feedback. From Studio version 11.199, only the objects that are on the visible page are now requested.

Publication Overview: Performance has been improved by only requesting required properties of objects on the page that is visible when viewed in Full Layout view. In previous versions, when opening a layout in Full Layout view in the Publication Overview, more properties of the objects on the visible page were requested than actually needed (5 in total). Now, only the necessary number of properties are requested (2 in total).

The icon for the Sticky Note Pin has changed to better indicate its position on the layout. When working with layouts in Studio, Sticky Notes can be placed to indicate any changes or corrections that need to be made to the content of a page. The icon in previous versions was designed as a square which made it difficult (if not impossible) to determine the exact position on the layout it was referring to.

To improve this, the icon has changed to a pointer so that the exact layout position can now be better determined.

The zoom tool in the layout preview has been repositioned to avoid obscuring underlying content. Studio 11.173 introduced a redesign of the fullscreen preview mode for layouts, including a new zoom tool. The tool included a slider and an option to add a zoom percentage and was positioned centrally and horizontally at the bottom of the screen.

User feedback indicated that because the tool could not be moved or hidden, the lower parts of a layout could not be viewed properly, thereby negatively impacting daily production.

As a result, the following changes have been made to the zoom tool:

It has been positioned vertically in the bottom right corner of the screen.
The option to manually enter a zoom percentage has been removed.

When closing and opening the Activity hub, the 'Only show unread' option in the Comments feed is no longer automatically disabled. When viewing comments in the Comments feed of the Activity hub and enabling the 'Only show unread' option, previous versions of Studio automatically disabled this option when closing and opening the Activity hub. This meant that the option would have to be re-enabled again. Now, when enabling the 'Only show unread' option and closing and opening the Activity hub, the state is retained.

Saving changes to a Sticky Note that is edited or replied to is now done by pressing Enter instead of clicking Save. In previous versions of Studio, saving a reply to a Sticky Note or saving an edited Sticky Note needed to be done by clicking a Save button. In other areas of Studio, similar actions (such as when creating a Sticky Note) were performed by pressing Enter.

To bring the functionality in line, the Save button has been removed from a Sticky Note that is being edited or replied to. Pressing Enter now needs to be used instead to save the changes.

Future support for Adobe 2025 has been added to the Desktop App while support for Adobe CC 2019 and older has been dropped. As part of our annual upgrade, the Studio Desktop App has been updated to support the latest version of Adobe: Adobe 2025.

Note: Please note that you will not be able to check files out of Adobe 2025 until we offer full support for it within our InDesign plug-ins, which is scheduled for release in March. However, the setting to enable this support will be available at the time of the plug-in launch.

With this move to support Adobe 2025, we will also be phasing out support for older versions of Adobe Creative Cloud. This includes Adobe CC 2019 and older.

More recent versions, starting from Adobe 2020 and above, will continue to be supported in the Studio Desktop App.

We strongly encourage all users to stay up to date with the latest software versions to remain within the compatibility windows for both Adobe and WoodWing.

New features

The following has been added in this release of Studio:

Users can now manage comments in a central location: the Comments feed of the Activity hub. A new area has been added to Studio: the Activity hub, currently containing one tab: the Comments feed. Here, users can view and manage comments in which they have been tagged. This gives a user a better overview of the conversations that the user is involved in, including the comments which still need acting upon.

This feature is available exclusively inside of WoodWing Studio Cloud.

The Activity hub can be accessed by clicking its icon in the top right corner of the page, next to the Inbox. A badge is shown when any comments exist which are marked as unread.

The Comments feed shows all comments in which users have been tagged (see below). For each comment, details are shown such as a read/unread status, a link to the file the comment was added to, a summary of the comment, the age of the comment, and more.

Clicking a comment opens the thread for that comment, showing the same components that are shown as when replying to a comment in the Comments panel. Here, replies can be added, or the comment can be marked as resolved. Resolved comments can also be made active again here.

Users can now be tagged in a comment. To enhance team collaboration, users whose assistance is needed or who need to be made aware of what is being discussed can now be tagged in a comment. These users are then notified that they have been mentioned in the comment so that they can assist with resolving the comment.

This feature is available exclusively inside of WoodWing Studio Cloud.

Users can see and manage comments in which they have been tagged in the Comments feed of the Activity hub (see above).

To tag a user, type the @-symbol within any comment or reply, and select the user from the list that appears.

In a comment, tags for the currently logged in user has an orange background; tags for other users have a light-gray background.

Changes

The following changes have been made in this release of Studio:

Digital articles: Support for Facebook and Instagram has been dropped. As announced in January 2025, support for adding a Facebook or Instagram post in a Digital article has been dropped. To add a Facebook or Instagram post, generate an embed code for that post and use the Embed component to add it to the article.

Known issues

The following known issues exist in this release of Studio:

CSH-6506 Tasks: (Applies to Safari only) When right-clicking a file in a Dossier and choosing 'Add to Task', the list of available Tasks does not appear.

CSH-6870 Print editor: Hidden characters are not shown for empty paragraphs when using Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

CSH-8824 Properties: Real-time updating of the Properties panel has been disabled. To see any changes made, the panel should be closed and re-opened again.

EN-94964 Planned images: After updating a Planned image that is stored in Assets, the image cannot be updated in InDesign.

Fixed issues

The following issues have been fixed in this release of Studio:

CSH-10326 Long names are cut off in the Issue and Status filter.

CSH-10464 Remove Facebook and Instagram support from the Media dialog.

CSH-10480 Support user @mentions in comments and add Activity Hub.
