We’d like to inform you of an important issue identified with Adobe InDesign 2026 version 21.2 that may impact production stability when used with InDesign Server.
InDesign 21.2 introduces a dependency of the native 'Layout UI' plug-in in documents that are saved with this version of InDesign. The 'Layout UI' plug-in is not available in InDesign Server. As a result, documents that have been opened or saved in InDesign 21.2 can trigger missing plug-in warnings and instability, including potential crashes, when processed on InDesign Server. This behavior does not occur with documents created using InDesign 21.1.
We have reported this issue to Adobe and it is currently under investigation. At this time, no resolution or timeline has been provided.
Impact
Any document that has been touched by InDesign 21.2 may encounter issues when processed on InDesign Server environments. This creates a significant risk for production workflows that rely on server side processing and stability.
As a result:
InDesign 21.2 is considered unsafe for use in environments that rely on InDesign Server.
Documents created or modified with InDesign 21.2 may cause missing plug-in errors and instability on InDesign Server.
Studio 2026 plug-ins will not be released while InDesign 21.2 is the latest available version.
Customers already using Assets for InDesign 2026 may be impacted if InDesign 21.2 is in use.
Workaround
To avoid production issues, customers should remain on InDesign 2026 version 21.1 and avoid upgrading to 21.2. Documents intended for InDesign Server processing should not be opened or modified in InDesign 21.2.
We recommend holding off on any InDesign upgrades until Adobe provides a fix or clear guidance.
