Before users can log in to Studio Server and start using it, a license needs to be activated for each Studio Server and for each application that connects to it.
Various license types can be purchased for each application to suit the needs of your organization.
Each license is explained in this article.

Studio Server
For Studio Server, licenses exist for using Studio Server itself and for the client applications that connect to it:
- Studio Server. License needed to use Studio Server. For each Studio Server installation, one such license is required.
- Studio Server Connection. License required for each 'Connection': a client application or external system that connects to Studio Server.
- Studio Server Planning Interface. Studio Server Planning Interface allows a connection between third-party applications used for planning publications in advance. This typically involves setting up InDesign layouts and specifying their number of pages, their content (including adverts), and more. Such planning interfaces can be integrated with Studio Server so that the planned layout pages can be used in the Studio Server workflow.
Product features and limitations
On a license level, no limitations exist as far as using any of the features of Studio Server is concerned.
Controlling access to features in Studio Server is done by assigning Access Rights to a user or user group; the license used to connect to Studio Server does not play a part in this.
Client applications
The following types of client applications can connect to Studio Server and therefore require a license:
- WoodWing Studio for InDesign and InCopy: Plug-ins for Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy that connects InDesign and InCopy with Studio Server. This license allows the use of InDesign layouts and InCopy articles in the Studio Server workflow. Licenses are available based on a seat-based and concurrent licensing model:
- Seat-based license: In this model, a license is purchased for each 'seat' (individual user). Each user can access the software at any time.
Example: You would use this model if you know exactly how many users will use the software. For a team of 50 users for example, you would purchase exactly 50 licenses.
- Concurrent license: In this model, licenses are shared between a group of users. As long as not all licenses are in use, additional users can continue to connect to Studio Server by logging in. When the maximum number of users is reached, any subsequent user who wants to log in will have to wait until another user logs out, at which time the license is made available for other users to use.
Example: You would use this model if it is unlikely that all users will access the system at the same time. For a team of 60 users you could for instance get a concurrent license for only 50 users. When 50 users are using the software, user 51 is denied access when logging in. When one of the 50 users logs out, that license is once again available.
- WoodWing Studio: an application for planning, creating, editing, and publishing content within the Studio Server workflow. The following main licenses are available:
- Studio Print. When users log in with this license, creating articles can only be done by using the Print editor (for creating content specifically for output to print). The Digital editor (for creating channel-neutral content for output to digital and print channels) will not be available.
- Studio Multichannel. When users log in with this license, creating articles can be done by either using the Print editor (for creating content specifically for output to print) or the Digital editor (for creating channel-neutral content for output to digital and print channels).
Note: For the exact functional differences between Studio Print and Studio Multichannel, see Comparing the different Editions of Studio.
- WoodWing Smart Mover. A system that automates tasks such as uploading, downloading or deleting Studio Server files, as well as many other tasks. All tasks can be scheduled to run when needed.
- Smart Styles: Plug-in for Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy that makes it possible to efficiently apply (complex) styling to text, tables and objects. Note that Smart Styles does not connect to Studio Server.
Product features and limitations
On a license level, no limitations exist as far as using any of the features of the client applications is concerned (with the exception of the Studio Print and Multichannel licenses, see above).
Once users are logged in, their access to features is controlled by assigning Access Rights to a user or user group.
