By default, Smart Connection stores layouts, articles and images in the smartconnection.noindex folder. When a shared drive is used, this folder is located on that shared drive.
When a low connection speed to the shared drive exists, InDesign Server can experience performance issues. Performance can be improved by letting Smart Connection save the files locally.
Do this by setting the 'UseCustomBaseFolder' option in the WWSettings.xml file for InDesign Server. This way, the SmartConnection.noindex folder will be created in the path as defined in the UseCustomBaseFolder option.
See Defining a custom Smart Connection folder for storing temporary Server files.
