About languages in Enterprise 10 and how to manage them

Available languages

Enterprise Server, Studio, and Smart Connection can be run in one of the following languages (meaning: all the text in these applications such as menus, buttons, messages and so on, will be displayed in this language):

• American English (default)
• Brazilian Portuguese
• Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
• Czech
• Dutch
• Finnish
• French
• German
• Italian
• Japanese
• Korean
• Polish
• Russian
• Spanish

Changing the language

Languages can be changed on the following levels:

• Company-wide
• Per user

Changing the language company-wide

A company language is used as the default language. This means that when the user is not known yet, the language is displayed in the set company language.

Example: The Log In dialog box could initially be displayed in the company language; once the user is logged in, the application switches to the language set in the user’s profile.

The company language is controlled by the following option in Enterprise Server:

Tip: (For Enterprise Server 10.1 or higher only) Easily manage and configure settings of all configuration files by adding them to a single configuration file.

• File: configserver.php file
• Name of option: CompanyLanguage
• Area: SERVERFEATURES
• Possible values:
• csCZ Czech
• deDE German
• enUS American English
• esES Spanish
• fiFI Finnish
• frFR French
• itIT Italian
• jaJP Japanese
• koKR Korean
• nlNL Dutch
• plPL Polish
• ptBR Brazilian Portuguese
• ruRU Russian
• zhCN Chinese (Simplified)
• zhTW Chinese (Traditional)

Changing the language per user

The global language can be overruled for each user through the Language option in the User Profile.

Step 1. In Enterprise Server, click Users in the Maintenance menu or on the Home page.

The Overview of Users page appears.

Step 2. Choose the user for which the language needs to be changed.

The User Maintenance page appears.

Step 3. From the Language list, choose the language:

Step 4. Click Update (or the equivalently named button in case Enterprise Server is run in a language other than English).

Areas affected by changing the language

Changing the user language affects the following areas:

Enterprise Server:

• All Maintenance pages (other pages such as the Health Check page only display in English)

Smart Connection:

• Column headers in the Smart Connection panel
• The context menu when right-clicking files in the Smart Connection panel
• Certain messages and dialog boxes

The remainder of the interface is controlled by the system language and the language in which InDesign and InCopy are run.

Studio:

• The full interface

Other factors by which the language is affected

The language in which InDesign and InCopy are displayed is also affected by the following:

• The language in which InDesign or InCopy is run. This is determined by the installer of InDesign or InCopy.

• The language of the operating system on which the client is run. Refer to the documentation for operating system.

Areas unaffected by changing the language

The following areas of the interface remain static, even when changing the language:

• Names of Brands, Publication Channels, Issues, Editions, Categories, Workflow statuses, and so on that were entered during the setup of the Brand.
• Names of Access Profiles, User Groups, Named Queries, and Metadata properties.

If needed, these need to be changed manually.

Changing the Enterprise Server language files

For each of the languages in which Enterprise Server can be displayed, a language file is available in Enterprise Server 10.

These files contain text that is displayed in the following areas:

• The Enterprise Maintenance pages
• The column headers and the context menu of the Smart Connection panel
• The column headers and the context menu of the Document pane in Studio
• Certain (error) messages in Smart Connection and Studio

In rare cases where the text needs to be corrected or changed, the files can be edited.

Note: When doing so, make sure to use a text editor that supports UTF-8 encoding. Also make sure to keep the XML format intact.

The files are stored in the following location:

<Enterprise Server path>/config/resources

The following files are available:

Changing Named queries (searches)

By default, the Search menu of the Smart Connection panel in InDesign and InCopy, and the Search menu in the Search pane of Studio, contains the Named Queries 'Libraries' and 'Templates'.

Any translation of the names and the column headers shown in the query results should be translated through the Maintenance page for that particular Named Query.

Note: This means that it is not possible to implement more than one translation of a Named Query per Brand at the same time.

Changing the article component labels in Studio

When editing an article in Studio using the Print editor, you can add a component to the article by making a choice from the Component Labels list (such as body, caption, and head).

The content of this list is derived from the componentDefs.xml file. In it, each element is stored in American English.

It is possible to localize these elements by doing the following:

Step 1. Access the componentDefs.xml file.

Step 2. Translate the name=” ” value as required.

Step 3. Save the file.

Changing the article component labels in Smart Connection

Using the Smart Connection functionality in both InDesign and InCopy, articles can be created with specified components such as body, caption, and head. InDesign users can make use of the Element Labels preferences for editing existing labels or creating new ones (these preferences are not available to InCopy users).

For more information about creating and using Element labels, see Working with Element Labels in Smart Connection 9.

The definitions of all custom made Element Labels used by InDesign and InCopy users are stored in the ElementTags.xml file. It is stored in the following location:

[InDesign application folder]/Plug-Ins\WoodWing

The file can be edited as required and shared across InDesign and InCopy users when needed.

Changing the Smart Connection Book Support script files

One of the features of Smart Connection in InDesign is the ability to add layouts that are stored in Enterprise to a Book panel. (For more information, see Working with InDesign Books in Smart Connection 9 for InDesign.)

This functionality is driven by a script named Enterprise Book Support, and the text that appears in the messages are also stored as part of that script.

In rare cases where the text needs to be corrected or changed, the files can be edited.

The default location for these text files is:

[InDesign application folder]/Scripts/Scripts Panel/Smart Connection Book Support/Translations
