In researching setting up a workflow using Elvis to manage assets placed in InDesign CC2015 layouts, I’ve come across a problem for which I can’t find a workaround: after relinking the placed images from their location on the hard drive to their location in Elvis, changes made to those linked images aren’t shown on the layout. Here are my initial steps:
- Layout and placed image assets are uploaded into a newly created Elvis folder.
- Layout checkout is initiated using "Open in InDesign" menu option in Elvis Pro client.
- At prompt asking “Do you want to relink the links to XXX to this file in Elvis,” click Yes after choosing “Select files from the same folder for other missing links.”
- After layout opens, verify that links now point to paths in user account in Elvis Checkouts folder on hard drive.
At this point, both the layout and the linked images are being managed by Elvis. The placed images can be checked out and modified from Elvis, then checked back in. However, the images will not update after selecting “Update all content” from the Elvis menu in InDesign.
Further, if after editing the image by checking it out from the Elvis client and opening in the native application, the image is then edited using the “Edit Original” option invoked from the contextual menu after selecting the image in InDesign, it will show the earlier edits that were made and saved back to Elvis. When the image is saved in the native application, the yellow alert triangle will appear above the image and in the links panel in InDesign, but the image itself won’t update. Choosing “Update all content” won’t refresh the view, and the alert triangles persist.
I’ve tried using both the desktop and Pro clients to manage the images, and the results are the same. No changes made using either client are updated on the layout.
However, I noticed that when I package a layout, the images do update on the original layout. It seems that the package process, in forcing a download of all linked items, forces the images to update in a way that “Update all content” does not.
I’m working in InDesign CC 2015.4 and Elvis plugin version 3.1.1. build 425 on Mac OS 10.12. Please let me know if you need more information.
