New features
The following new feature has been introduced in this release of Smart Connection:
- Support for Single Sign-on (SSO) using Okta. Single sign-on is a process in which users log in once to an authentication provider that manages their user credentials.
Once logged in to that authentication provider, each subsequent log-in to an application that is connected to that provider is automatically handled by that system. This drastically reduces the number of times that users have to manually log in on a daily basis.
Implementing single sign-on is done in Enterprise Server 10.7.0 and higher and is supported in Smart Connection 12.3.0.

Changes
The following change has been made in this release of Smart Connection:
- Changes made to Issues in Enterprise Server are now automatically updated in Smart Connection. When Issues are created, modified, deleted, or reordered in Enterprise Server, the user interface in Smart Connection is now dynamically updated. This applies in particular to the Smart Connection panel (the Issues list in Browse mode and the Search Criteria dialog box). In previous versions, the user had to log out and log in again to see these changes.
This improvement requires Enterprise Server 10.4.1 or later. It also requires either broadcasting enabled, or RabbitMQ up and running.
Technical details: The Smart Connection client is notified by the server using messaging, either by broadcast/multicast, or by RabbitMQ push notifications. New events were introduced in Enterprise Server 10.4.1 (CreateIssue, ModifyIssue, DeleteIssue, UpdateIssuesOrder, UpdatePubChannel). These have not yet been added to the Web Services guide; this is planned for the next update of the guide which is scheduled for Enterprise Server 10.5.
Note: Content Station 11 does not yet support this dynamic update of the mentioned Issue changes. This is planned for an upcoming release. This functionality will not be added to Content Station 9.
Known issues
No known issues exist for this release of Smart Connection.

Release date: 26 March 2018

New features
The following new feature has been introduced in this release of Smart Connection:
- Scripting: 'BeforePlace' script event added. A 'BeforePlace' event has been added to the scripting object model of Smart Connection. For more information, see the Scripting Guide.
Changes
The following change has been made in this release of Smart Connection:
New article format (WCML3). In Enterprise, articles are stored in WoodWing's WCML format. Smart Connection 12.2.0 introduces a new version of this format: 'WCML3'. The old format is referred to as 'WCML2'.
The new format brings the following improvements:
- Reduced file size by not duplicating all style definitions, colors, swatches, fonts, and font families for each article component.
- Improved performance for opening and saving the article by replacing the parser that is used for exporting and importing article data by a more modern, better performing XML parser.
We think that reducing data transfer and file size is important, especially for Enterprise Aurora installations and cloud hosting. The new WCML3 article format will help with this.
Expected performance improvements
During the development of this new format, much testing was done to determine the performance improvement. What the improvement will be in your production environment very much depends on the complexity of the articles:
- Small articles containing only a few components will see very little improvement.
- For complex articles containing many styles (100+) and over 30 components, we saw a reduction in article size of 90%, while the speed of opening the article improved by 30%.
Compatibility with Smart Connection versions
Support for WCML3 is available in the following versions of Smart Connection:
- CC 2014 or 2015: Not available. This means that InDesign, InCopy and InDesign Server for CC 2014 or 2015 are not able to open or read articles in WCML3 format; only the WCML2 is supported. Any upcoming patches for CC 2014 or CC 2015 will also not include support for the WCML3 article format.
- CC 2017: WCML2 and WCML3 are supported with Smart Connection 12.2.0 or higher. For backwards compatibility, the default file format is WCML2. Smart Connection 12.1.x or earlier is not able to open or read WCML3.
- CC 2018: WCML2 and WCML3 will be supported.
Support in Enterprise Server and Content Station
The current innovation versions of Enterprise Server and Content Station support the new article format:
- Enterprise Server supports WCML3 since version 10.2.
- Content Station Aurora supports the new article format since 11.0.
- Content Station 9 supports the new article format since Content Station 9.8.14.
Note: The new article format will not be supported with the maintenance version of Enterprise Server, 10.1.x.
When to use WCML3
You should consider to start using the new WCML format when:
- New Enterprise installations are set up that include Enterprise Server 10.2 or later, Content Station 11 and Smart Connection for CC 2017.
- Complex articles containing many components are used.
- Situations in with high latency exist and where large articles are created and edited in Content Station (this is typically the case when InDesign Servers for preview generation are hosted in the cloud).
- A major upgrade to the upcoming Smart Connection for CC 2018 is performed.
Technical details
The structure of the story has been changed: XML elements (such as styles, colors, preferences, and so on) that are shared by stories are no longer in every story but are instead placed in a shared section. The content section itself has not been changed. Third-parties that rely on the content structure should not be affected.
The structure of article templates files (.wcmt) has not been changed.
The XML parser that is used to import and export styling data and story content has been replaced with pugixml. The previous parser was Xerces based. The switch is motivated by performance considerations.
For the XML schemas including an example of each schema, see the following link:
Enabling WCML3
Enabling WCML3 is done by adding the the following option to the SERVERFEATURES in the config_overrule.php file of Enterprise Server:
new Feature( 'WcmlVersion3' ),
Upgrade strategy
Enabling WCML3 affects all Smart Connection users signing in to the instance of Enterprise Server, regardless of the version of Smart Connection that they are using. It is important therefore to only switch to the generation of articles in WCML3 format once all Smart Connection installations have been upgraded to Smart Connection 12.2.0 or higher.
Known issues
No known issue exists for this release of Smart Connection.
Documentation
No changes to the documentation have been made for this release of Smart Connection.
- Scripting for Smart Connection - updated
- The documentation relating to the new WCML3 article format will be added to the Smart Connection documentation soon.

Smart Connection for Adobe CC 2017 (version 12.1.0) build 11
Release date: 11 December 2017
Downloads
The download files for this version of Smart Connection can be found in the Release announcement.
New features
The following new features have been introduced in Smart Connection for Adobe CC 2015 (version 12.1.0 build 11):
- Smart Caching: automatically downloading a routed file. When a file is routed to a user, it is typically downloaded from the server at the moment the user opens it for editing. This means that the user has to wait until the download is complete before working on it can start. In situations where the connection to the server is slow (for example when working from a remote location) or when large files need to be downloaded, it can take quite a while before the download is complete.
Smart Caching can be used to make this process more efficient by downloading a file to a user's system immediately when it is routed. Downloading the file takes place in the background so the user can continue working with Smart Connection. When the user then wants to work on the file, it is immediately available because it is already downloaded.
Note: Smart Caching for Smart Connection is made possible by using the Smart Caching functionality of Content Station 10. It requires the use of the Content Station Desktop application; Content Station 10 itself is not needed.
For more information about Smart Caching, see:
- Automatically downloading a routed file in Smart Connection
- Configuring Smart Caching for Smart Connection
- InCopy: opening a placed article while bringing it to front in Layout view. When an article is placed on a layout, it could be that other objects on that layout are partially or fully placed over it.
When opening an article and viewing it in Layout view, article components can therefore be partially or fully obscured from view, or shown in a dimmed state. As a result, any changes made to the article content is not visible in Layout view or the article component could potentially not be accessible from Layout view, for example to open it for editing.
To resolve this, all components of the article that is opened can be brought to the front in Layout view. This makes the content of the article fully visible and each article component accessible for editing.
Bringing the article components to the front in Layout view is done at the time when the article is opened and requires the following new preference to be enabled:
Smart Connection > Options > Bring InCopy Articles to Front in Layout View
Figure: The 'Bring InCopy Articles to Front in Layout View' preference.
For more information, see Opening articles in InCopy using Smart Connection.
- InCopy: new preference 'Bring InCopy Articles to Front in Layout View'. A new preference has been added named 'Bring InCopy Articles to Front in Layout View'. When enabled, opening an article that is placed on a layout will bring all article components of that story to the front in Layout view. This makes sure that all article components are fully accessible and not obscured by other layout objects. For more information, see Opening articles in InCopy using Smart Connection.
Changes
The following changes have been made in Smart Connection for Adobe CC 2015 (version 12.1.0 build 11):
- Configuring columns no longer resets panels. With the fixes for EN-35354 and EN-88961, the behavior of column configuration of the panels in Smart Connection has been improved. Before the fixes, a change in the Query Result Columns in the Dialog Setup maintenance page would result in a reset of the columns in InDesign. For example: if the administrator adds a custom property to the Query Result Columns, all InDesign and InCopy clients would fall back to a default set of columns after the user logs in. With the fixes, the configuration of the visible columns and the ordering of columns the InDesign and InCopy clients will no longer be lost. This applies to the Smart Connection panel, the Dossier panel and other query panels. The changes affect all query modes (Browse, Inbox, Search, Saved queries, and so on).
- wwcx (CS4 article format): 'read' support has been removed. The wwcx article format was replaced by the wcml format in InDesign CS 5 and InCopy CS5 (released in 2010). With Smart Connection for CC 2017 version 12.1.0, articles stored in wwcx format cannot be opened any longer.
