Compatibility of Enterprise Server 10.6

This article describes the compatibility of Enterprise Server 10.6 with other systems.

Operating systems

Notes: The operating systems listed are valid for the Web server running Enterprise Server and the File Transfer Server. When the database and the Application Server run on different machines, Enterprise does not add extra restrictions to the operating system that runs the database. When both are running in the same box the choice of the operating system is limited. For all operating system flavors, it is recommended to use the 64-bit version to gain better performance. Verify that any software that is installed by default by the operating systems such as PHP, Web browsers, and so on is also compatible with Enterprise Server. Update these applications when needed. The compatibility of non-WoodWing products with operating systems has not been verified; please check this separately.

MacOS

Status: Support for Enterprise Server 10.6 on MacOS has been deprecated. This also includes support for sips, but does not apply to InDesign Server. For new installations and upgrades we strongly recommend to move to Linux or MS Windows. However, Enterprise Server 10.6 can be used on the versions of MacOS that are listed as 'Deprecated' and is fully supported on those versions.

Note: The MAMP package can be used for development and demo environments but it is not suitable for production purposes. See www.mamp.info.

Content Station

Compatibility of Enterprise Server 10.6 with Content Station.

Content Station 11 (Aurora)	Yes	Requires Content Station 11.42 or higher. Support for using Content Station 11 with a specific version of Enterprise Server will be dropped once that version of Enterprise Server has reached its end of the extended maintenance period.

Databases

Note: When the database and the Application Server run on different machines, Enterprise does not add extra restrictions to the operating system that runs the database. When both are running in the same box the choice of the operating system is limited, as specified for the Application Server.

Microsoft SQL

Note: To connect to Microsoft SQL Server, the Application Server must run on a Windows Server as well. This is because the database driver for Microsoft SQL Server is not maintained for MacOS and Linux.

Note: This information only applies to the compatibility between Elvis and Enterprise as a whole. Any plug-ins for Enterprise Server are not guaranteed to be backwards compatible for Enterprise versions that they are not released with.

ionCube is used by Enterprise Server to encrypt some of its PHP modules.

Note: Do not install ionCube via the ionCube Web site. The correct version of ionCube to install is provided during the installation of Enterprise Server by an ionCube wizard.

² PHP on Linux: In former versions of Enterprise Server, WoodWing has aimed to support the PHP version as shipped with the supported Linux flavors and versions. However, this no longer holds because of worsening external factors.

On one hand, some Linux flavors (such as RedHat) may provide rather old PHP versions for their recent release. On the other hand, PHP only gives 1.5 year maintenance support.

For most major or minor releases of PHP it takes third-parties (such as ionCube Loader) 6 months to get stable enough for Enterprise Server. This narrows the window of PHP support, which is important when it comes to security fixes.

Enterprise Server however, integrates with many more 3rd-party components — such as Zend Framework, Solr, MSSQL driver, and so on — which enforces it to support a recent PHP version for its new releases.

As a result of all these external factors, some Linux installations may require manual upgrades to newer PHP versions than those provided out-of-the-box.

³ PHP on Windows: Only use VC14 compiled versions of PHP 7.2, else PHP is not compatible with ionCube Loader.
