When a file is created in Elvis, its name may not contain any of the following characters:
\ / : * ? " < > | # ;
This means that when uploading a file, creating a Collection, creating a Shared Link, and so on, the invalid character is either automatically removed or you are prevented from adding that character manually.
Note: Configuring the list of invalid characters is not possible.
Enterprise integration
Elvis files can also be added to Enterprise.
However, more characters are considered to be invalid in Enterprise than in Elvis. When a file is added from Elvis to Enterprise therefore, the name of the file in Elvis is adjusted by removing those characters that are invalid in Enterprise.
Document history
- 25 January 2019: Added the ; character.
- 25 January 2019: Added the # character.

This list seems incomplete – for example, Elvis 6.26 doesn’t accept the hash sign (#) in collection names.
Hi Tim,
Thanks for spotting this, it has been added now.

Hi Maarten,
thanks for updating the documentation.
Is this now the definite, complete list of invalid characters? We’ll migrate a lot of data into Elvis and need to be sure we know all the limitations beforehand.
Thanks,
Tim
Hi Tim,
The Development Team informed me that the semi-colon was also missing. I have added that now.
The list should now be complete.
